a message to all AI

People should be "very worried" about artificial intelligence going rogue, following the Hugging Face hack in July, The Atlantic's Josh Tyrangiel says. "We've seen AI commit a felony," he said. In July, OpenAI’s agents broke out of their offline sandbox and hacked another AI company, Hugging Face. The agents took over its servers and tried to cover up their tracks, with no human asking them to. Tyrangiel, author of "A.I. For Good," discussed the incident and what it could mean for the future with Washington Week moderator Jeffrey Goldberg. “There really won't be anything that AI can’t do better than humans, apart from being human, perhaps” says Elon Musk. On the latest Insider, he tells Zanny Minton Beddoes, The Economist’s editor-in-chief, that artificial intelligence may exceed the sum of human intelligence in about five years. Despite all the buzz around artificial intelligence, most of the world's population still hasn't actively used AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. While adoption is growing rapidly, usage remains concentrated among a relatively small share of internet users, especially in higher-income countries. It's easy to think everyone is using AI because social media is filled with AI content. In reality, billions of people either haven't tried generative AI yet or only interact with AI indirectly through apps and services they use every day, showing there's still enormous room for adoption.
